Same words. One of them stays tidy.
A word processor that knows what a chapter is.
Every document has an outline. Drag a section to another place: its number, its references and the contents follow. Every figure, table and note is there too.
Write on the left. Watch the page on the right.
The PDF is set while you write, and a click on it takes you back to the words. Here, a cover: your picture to the edges of the page, in one of twenty-seven designs.
Pick what you are writing.
A report, a book, a paper for IEEE, a letter, a résumé, a recipe, a novel, an exam: a template for each, with its styles. The template keeps the look; you keep the words.
Formulas, diagrams and code, from text.
Type a formula as you would say it and see it drawn; describe a diagram and it is laid out; paste code and it stays code.
Your .bib, cited in one click.
Add your bibliography file, search it from the Insert menu, and the citation and the list of references are written for you, in APA, IEEE or the style your template asks for.
Footnotes and margin notes, where they belong.
A footnote lives in its sentence and is numbered for you; a margin note stands beside the paragraph it speaks of. On the page, each goes where a typesetter would put it.
Typst sets the page.
Wombat writes Typst, the typesetter of a new generation: the care of LaTeX, hyphenation, footnotes at the foot, formulas that look like formulas, in a second, from plain text. You never see the code unless you ask for it.
Done? Export.
And the .wombat file itself is a zip with your document in HTML and its pictures: unzip it and read it, with no Wombat at all.
On a Mac, a Mac app.
Your documents in the Finder, found by Spotlight, shown by Quick Look; the PDF drawn by the Mac; Typst inside, so it needs no internet. Also for Windows and Linux, below.
Numbers that count themselves
Sections, figures, references and the table of contents follow the document. Move a chapter and every “see Section 3” still points to it.
A PDF a typesetter would sign
Wombat writes Typst, so the page is set with care: hyphenation, footnotes at the foot, formulas that look like formulas.
Still friends with Word
Open a .docx, and send one back when someone asks. Wombat keeps the structure; Word gets a clean copy.
Wombat is the better tool for
Theses, reports, manuals, papers with references, letters you send every month.
Word is still the better tool for
Tracked changes with a team that lives in Word, and free-form flyers where every box goes anywhere.
Download the app
The same editor, as an app on your computer: it opens and saves your files where they are, and compiles without the internet. Version 0.1.0.
Mac
macOS 15 or later, Apple silicon and Intel. Unzip it and move Wombat to Applications. It is not signed yet: the first time, macOS stops it; open it again from System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway.Windows
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. It is not signed yet: if Windows says it protected your PC, choose More info › Run anyway.Linux
64-bit Intel or AMD. The .deb for Debian and Ubuntu; the AppImage for the others: make it executable and run it.Nothing to install. Your document stays on your computer.
